The Fishery
Xcalak is a short boat ride from the expansive flats of Chetumal Bay. These flats are home to a very strong population of bonefish and excellent numbers of permit. The local guides are masters of their craft. They have amazing eyes and will spot fish long before the angler, perfect for you to get your house in order and be ready for the shot! All the guides speak adequate English, so communicating to catch fish is not a problem. You will get the opportunity to fish from the boat as well as wade some beautiful hard bottomed sandy flats. In addition to the bones and permit, you will have shots at strong, fighting jacks and some toothy barracudas. There is also the possibility of catching Baby Tarpon and Snook!
The guide, assistant, and angler fish from dialed in 20-23 foot pangas that feature poling platforms, extensive casting decks, and lean bars that make for a comfortable fishing day. Fishing is only a short boat ride from the launch site. These guides and thier assisants are true masters of thier craft and will put you on fish all day long. If you had to choose only one rod for the area, it would be an 8 weight, but a 9 weight can help turn over heavier permit flies on long leaders. If the wind is low, a 7 weight can be a lot of fun. If you want to throw at jacks or ‘cudas, a 9 or 10 weight is in order. Fly line selection is easy as almost all of the fishing in the area is done with floating lines. We recommend standard saltwater tapered fly lines for bonefish and more aggressive tapers (like the Scientific Anglers Titan taper or their Grand Slam taper). All guests will receive a detailed list of leaders, tippets, and flies for the trip
