Class Overview:
Our goal with this class is to take intimidation factor out of learning how to fly fish.
Join us in Kamas Utah at Fishwest for our single day fly fishing classes, Situated at the base of Utah's Iconic Uinta National forest, this one day course will leave you with the knowledge, to get out and enjoy fly fishing on your own.
Learn about gear, reading water, finding fish, identifying local fish species, rigging a rod, entomology, and tying basic knots.
This class is roughly 6 hours long and has and has a maximum of 6 (six) students per class.
The on the water portion of the class will feature a 3:1 guide ratio to maximize your time on the water.
1 Day Class Outline:
Our Fly Fishing Class covers the following:
- Essential Fly Fishing Knots
- Fly Tackle & Rigging Essentials
- Stream Entomology (Bugs 101)
- Fly Selection 101
- Approaching & Reading Water
- Casting Essentials
- Fly Presentation
- How to play and land fish safely
- Catch & Release Principals
Location & Start Time:
Classes are held at Fishwest Fly Shop 138 W 280 S, Kamas Utah. Fishing location will be based on current weather and water conditions.
Start Time: 8AM - Classes start at the shop with a classroom session that lasts roughly 2-2.5 hours covering a variety of fly fishing basics such as equipment setup, rigging, reading water and more.
After a short break for lunch, students will meet on the river for an afternoon on-the-water fishing session with their instructor.
Duration: 6 Hours
Classes will be held rain or shine. In the event of extreme inclement weather, class may be rescheduled based on instructor and guide recommendations.

What's Included:
- Rods & Reels* - Our Guides set you up with a high-quality rod and reel that match your experience level and the trip at hand.
- Flies - Guides will chose the most current patterns daily from our shop’s selection of top quality flies.
- Terminal Tackle - Included in the price of every trip is terminal tackle including tippet, split shot, leaders, and strike indicators.
- Wading Gear* - Our premium waders and wading boots from Orvis & Redington will keep you dry (and help you stay upright) throughout the trip.
- Food** - Lunch is provided while on the water in class. Please let the staff know of any food allergies during booking.
*You’re always welcome to bring your own gear if you’d prefer, nothing beats fishing your own equipment. However, we dont offer a discount for doing so.
Not Provided:
- Utah Fishing License - Fishing licenses are required for all trip participants over the age of 13. Please visit the Utah Division of Wildlife for additional Information.
- **Guide Gratuity - Never expected, always appreciated. Our guides work hard to provide you with the best possible experience and appreciate the generosity.
Fly Fishing School FAQ:
Yes, students attending our 1-day fishing school at Fishwest will need to purchase a Utah Fishing license. Licenses can be purchased online through the Utah Division of Wildlife
Yes, students must be 10 years of age or older to attend our fly fishing school and MUST be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or sibling over the age of 18.
The class is divided fairly equally wiith roughly 2 hours of classroom time, followed by about 2.5 hours on the water.
Cost includes all instruction, lunch, and the use of fly rods and reels, leaders, flies, and where necessary waders and wading boots
Students will need to bring rain gear, a hat, polarized sunglasses and sunscreen
Students should dress according to weather. We recommend wearing quick dry hooded sun shirts, and quick dry bottoms.

Lunch is the only meal provided as part of of fly fishing school. Please let our staff know if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions during booking of the class.
The Fishwest Fly Fishing School is located in the foothills of the Uinta Moutains in Kamas Utah. The town of Kamas is minutes away from some of Northern Utah's most productive fisheries. Fishwest Fly Shop is approximately 1 hour from Salt Lake City and only 15 Minutes from ski resorts of Park City,
