Fly Fishing 101

Class Overview:
Throughout the summer, Fishwest in is happy to offer a Fly Fishing 101 Class to anglers. This two-hour course is geared towards new anglers or those looking for a refresher. First, participants spend time in the shop learning about important gear, knots, rigging techniques, and fly selection.
After getting a feel for the equipment, the class heads outside to master different casting techniques, such as the roll and overhead cast. Rods and reels are provided, but if you have your own gear, you are welcome to bring it. Students who complete Fly Fishing 101 receive exclusive discounts to Fishwest, to stock up on fly fishing gear and hit the water to practice your new skills.
Class Outline:
- Rigging basics - gear breakdown. Understanding equipment, right tool “toolbox”, set up rigs for current conditions and student preference/goals.
- Knot Tying - Master the double surgeons, clinch, and improved clinch knots
- Casting - Four change of direction casts, why and when.
- Fly Selection - Learn about basic fly types, and how to setup a fly box from scratch
- Wrap-up - Final Q&A

Classes start at Fishwest Fly Shop 138 W 280 S, Kamas Utah. This class does not include any on the water time.

- Rods & Reels* - Our staff will set you up with a high-quality rod and reel to use during class time
- Flies - Guides will chose the most current patterns daily from our shop’s selection of top quality flies.
- Goodie Bag - Our team has curated a small selection of flies, a fly box, a a couple other essentials for you to enjoy on the water.
*You’re always welcome to bring your own gear if you’d prefer, nothing beats learning how to use your own equipment. However, we don't offer a discount for doing so.
